The Facts

Here are some facts about Florida work zone crashes that may surprise you.

  • Over 90% of people who die in work zone crashes are motorists and pedestrians.
  • More than half of the fatal crashes in work zones occur after dark.
  • Nearly one quarter of fatal crashes in work zones are influenced by alcohol and drugs.
  • Over 50% of all work zone crashes happen because of speeding.

If you thought work zone safety was ONLY our job, think again.

Year three of the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) Work Zone Safety campaign is underway. The message has not changed. Everyone must continue recognizing the dangers of reckless driving through highway work zones.

FDOT is focused on the excuses motorists use for hazardous and distracted travel through road construction areas. The campaign examines the reality that it truly is everyone’s job to insure safety on our roadways, especially in highway work zones.

“No more excuses,” said FDOT Assistant Secretary Kevin Thibault. “We must work together to save lives and reduce injuries in work zones.”

FDOT is joined in this effort by the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP), the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), the American Traffic Safety Services Association (ATSSA), the Florida Sheriff’s Association (FSA), the Florida Police Chiefs Association (FPCA) and several other state and national transportation organizations as partners in the campaign.
